CHAMANDY FONDATION
2025 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Sargent’s Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) is offering, this year for the second time, a sailing scholarship for local youth (8-15 years old) whose families could not otherwise afford to attend. This scholarship is made available thanks to the Chamandy Foundation. The budget of this program for underprivileged youth is evaluated at $360,000 over 20 years.
SBYC was founded in 1935 in Sargent's Bay as a non-profit organization operating thanks to the help of committed volunteers and families. The sailing staff are qualified young people who have mostly all been summer sailors at SBYC themselves. Youth sailors get a basic introduction to sailing, and they can undertake to get CANSail certification levels. For more information on the sailing program (link) and SBYC please see below.
The operation of the sailing school runs for several weeks with the scholarship program starting on Monday July 7th. Minimum enrollment is two consecutive weeks. Experience has taught us that this period corresponds to the time it takes for the kids to become comfortable with the equipment, the sailing vocabulary and really optimize their experience.
Sailing days are Monday to Friday, 9:30-4pm. All participants are picked up and dropped off by boat (zodiac) at Knowlton’s landing, the Georgeville dock, or Bryant’s landing. The boat takes participants to the site which is accessible exclusively by water. This is what makes SBYC so unique! Every Thursday, there is a special activity after regular hours. This activity is entirely optional.
Benefits
The scholarship is worth around $2000 and covers all registration and membership fees for the accepted young person. The value of the learning and the friendships that are created, some for life, are however, invaluable! It includes benefits such as the transportation by zodiac to the site, access to a dinghy on your own and all the equipment required to rig your boat, the use of a lifejacket, your own SBYC t-shirt and hoodie, an invitation to participate to the friendly Sunday races, your Federation Voile Quebec membership, and more! Some of the Thursday after-hour activities have additional costs which are also covered for scholarship recipients. Examples of these activities include: hot dogs on firepit; bowling; laser tag; capture the flag; cinema, etc. The scholarship provides everything you need to make new friends and learn how to sail together !
