Coaches of Summer 2019
Head Coach: Miriam Paterson
Ahoy sailors!
It is hard to put into words how excited I am to work as Head Coach at SBYC this coming summer of 2018!
This will be my fourth consecutive summer working at SBYC, and my first in this position. Having coached the race team for the past 3 summers, not only did I have the pleasure of working with the club's more experienced sailors, I also witnessed the tremendous development in newer sailors as they moved up through the Junior Program and into more advanced sailing. I am now completely stoked to oversee the entire process and keep it rolling!
I began sailing at Sargent's Bay when I was eight-years old- having initially signed up for the regular two-weeks, I immediately extended my stay after only a few days at camp! I immediately felt attached to the immense power that sailing had to offer: being able to navigate beautiful Lake Memphrémagog and experience the thrill of zipping across the water without relying on an engine of any sort. This inspired me to work up towards joining the race team when I was 12, exposing me to a sport like no other: the combined mental and physical challenges of spending long hours out on the water pushed me to new limits as an athlete, and allowed me to forge some of my dearest friendships with my fellow teammates.
Of course, SBYC means a lot more to me than just sailing. Although we often joke about the "rustic" side of the club, there is no doubt that it is this very aspect that makes it so unique and desirable. Its environment is what teaches campers independence, problem-solving, and leadership skills that go way beyond sailing. It is a place for personal growth, team-building, and the formation of life-long friendships.
From my own experience, I know that the club provides sailors with skills and tools that they will use for the rest of their lives.
My primary goal this summer is for all campers at SBYC to develop the same passion for both the club and sailing that I and the other coaches have acquired over the years. I would like younger generations at the club to feel like it is their own, and to carry on its traditions and spirit into the future. An exciting new addition to the sailing program that I believe will contribute to this is the "Opti-Green" program. This offers optimist sailors in CANSail 2 the chance to work towards completing their level whilst being introduced to the basics of racing and being given the opportunity to participate in regattas.
On behalf of the entire staff and the Board of Directors, welcome to SBYC's 83rd season! We thank you for the continued opportunity to keep transmitting our love for sailing, the club, and Lake Memphrémagog to younger generations or sailors.
I look forward to seeing new and familiar faces at dock-day!

Hello sailors,
I’m Theo and I will be coaching the Advanced Sailing Program and Race Team at SBYC. I’m very excited to get back on the lake and train another generation of laser and opti racers. Sargent’s Bay has always special to me: it is the club that really nurtured my love for sailing and is the place where I made countless friends. Whether It be hanging out on deck, racing at Cork, or swimming across the bay, the experiences I’ve had at SBYC have always been positive. Every year I would countdown the days until camp and every year, I would be welcomed back by old and new friends, all ready for an sensational summer on the water. I hope to see this tradition continue so that younger sailors may have the same amazing experiences sailing in the bay.
See you on the lake,
Theo

Hi everyone!
I’m Miriam and this is my second year coaching at SBYC. I coached the junior sailors last year and will be coaching the optimist green fleet this summer. I was on the race team for 6 years and raced optimists for 3 of those years. I hope to transmit whatever knowledge I have of the sport that filled all of my summers since I was younger! SBYC is a unique sailing experience in a way that encourages not only growth regarding sailing skills, but character as well. After all, we spend the entire day in a shack or on the lake.
It’s always nerve racking for kids to start racing, which they do in optis, but it’s also amazing to see how much growth in regard to perseverance and character can be noted after each season at the club. Optis are the boats in which I learned to love to race, so I hope that I can transmit that to the new racers this summer!
Here’s to a windy season!

Hi!
I have been sailing at SBYC for the past 8 years. This year I am looking forward to coaching the Cansail 2 program. I have greatly enjoyed my time over the years and hope to be able convey that to the younger sailors this summer. I spent 4 years racing and have made many great friends at this club. I have always loved how relaxing or intense sailing can be and just how technical it is. One of my favourite memories is probably the Helly Hansen Lake Race that the coaches organized for us one year. I hope to see all the new and returning sailors at dock day to kick off this year’s sailing season.

Hi!
I’m Isaac, and this Summer I’ll be in charge of coaching the CANSail 1’s. I’ve been sailing as long as I can remember and Sargent’s Bay has always been my home. The memories I’ve made here are some of the best in my life. I know the friends I’ve made at SBYC and the skills I’ve learnt will last forever. Whether it’s sailing, knot tying, or problem-solving, this camp lets you learn valuable and important lessons beside people who become lifelong friends.
Anyone who comes through SBYC can tell you that we aren’t on an ordinary lake, and we aren’t any ordinary club, either. This community has helped me grow as both a sailor and a person, and I’m excited to give back by teaching the next generation of sailors. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of the wind coursing through your sail as you fly through the water. I want to help every junior sailor experience that, and help strengthen their skills until they can do it consistently. I can’t wait for you all to join us on our beautiful lake!
See you this Summer!

Frances Chambers
Hi all!
I’m Frances (or Frankie!), and I’m going to be coaching Cansail 1s this summer! I’ve been sailing at SBYC for seven years, and, before that, have been sailing with my family for as long as I can remember. SBYC is the place where I learned to love to sail, met some of my closest friends, and call home to my favourite memories. I’ve always waited in anticipation to hear which coaches would be coming each summer – and now I wait in anticipation to be one! At SBYC, the coaches really make each new summer what it is, and I have no doubt that this one will be just as amazing. Despite the uniqueness of each summer, throughout my years, my coaches have always motivated, guided, and been a friend to me. That is why I’m so excited to not only introduce new campers to this fantastic sport, but also to introduce them to our special little community.
Cheers to some great sailing,
Frances Chambers
