Head Coach: Miriam Paterson
Hello, my name is Miriam and I will be the head coach of SBYC this summer. This year will mark my 12th year at SBYC and I have been a coach for three of those. I coached the optimist race team last year and the junior sailors the year before.
SBYC is an amazing club for kids of all ages. As coaches, we hope to make each kid who sets foot on the docks live a memorable summer and learn to love the sport. SBYC is not your typical yacht club. We may not have running water, electricity or a flush toilet, but what we lack in technology we make up for with the spirit of adventure and the will to make the most out of everything we have. We spend our days on the lake we all love and every kid learns, in one way or another, to problem solve and to become self-reliant. SBYC teaches kids a lot about the sport as well as about teamwork. Being mainly teamed up in pairs or in groupes of three every day, the kids meet a lot of new friends and build friendships that last a lifetime. The coaching staff this summer is composed of myself, Theo, Angus, Isaac, Frances and Alex. We were all on the race team together for many years before we one by one became coaches. The club means a lot to all of us and I cannot wait for another summer with the crew and with the sailors! I have been passionate about sailing since I started at the age of six in Toronto and I hope to pass on that love to your kids this summer! Hope to see you all at dock day on June 22nd! This will give the coaching team a chance to meet you for you to meet all of us! Miriam |
Race team Coach: Theo Janson
Hello sailors,
I’m Theo and I will be coaching the Advanced Sailing Program and Race Team at SBYC. I’m very excited to get back on the lake and train another generation of laser and opti racers. Sargent’s Bay has always been special to me: it is the club that really nurtured my love for sailing and is the place where I made countless friends. Whether It be hanging out on deck, racing at Cork, or swimming across the bay, the experiences I’ve had at SBYC have always been positive. Every year I would countdown the days until camp and every year, I would be welcomed back by old and new friends, all ready for an sensational summer on the water. I hope to see this tradition continue so that younger sailors may have the same amazing experiences sailing in the bay. See you on the lake, Theo |
Opti Coach: Angus Aitken
Hello everyone!
I'm Angus and this will be my tenth year sailing out of SBYC and my second year coaching. Every spring I look forward to returning to camp and this isn't any less true returning to coach the Opti fleet this summer. I sailed and raced Optis for four years and greatly enjoyed all that can be learned in this small boat. I have always loved how relaxing or intense sailing can be and just how technical it really is. Sargent's Bay is more than just a camp that taught me to sail. I have made many great friends have many fond memories of my summers spent racing. At first having an entire boat to yourself may seem scary but the feeling of freedom that comes from planning across the water on a windy day is something I dream of all winter. Coaching Opti's I hope to be able to help sailors adjust to this new boat and introduce them to the basics of racing. I look forward to seeing new and returning faces at dock day when the water is slightly warmer. Angus Aitken |
Cansail Coach: Isaac Kopstein
Hi!
I’m Isaac, and this Summer I’ll be in charge of coaching the CANSail 1’s. I’ve been sailing as long as I can remember and Sargent’s Bay has always been my home. The memories I’ve made here are some of the best in my life. I know the friends I’ve made at SBYC and the skills I’ve learnt will last forever. Whether it’s sailing, knot tying, or problem-solving, this camp lets you learn valuable and important lessons beside people who become lifelong friends. Anyone who comes through SBYC can tell you that we aren’t on an ordinary lake, and we aren’t any ordinary club, either. This community has helped me grow as both a sailor and a person, and I’m excited to give back by teaching the next generation of sailors. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of the wind coursing through your sail as you fly through the water. I want to help every junior sailor experience that, and help strengthen their skills until they can do it consistently. I can’t wait for you all to join us on our beautiful lake! See you this Summer! - Isaac |
Cansail Coach: Frances Chambers
Hi all!
I’m Frances (or Frankie!), and I’m going to be coaching Cansail 1s this summer! I’ve been sailing at SBYC for seven years, and, before that, have been sailing with my family for as long as I can remember. SBYC is the place where I learned to love to sail, met some of my closest friends, and call home to my favourite memories. I’ve always waited in anticipation to hear which coaches would be coming each summer – and now I wait in anticipation to be one! At SBYC, the coaches really make each new summer what it is, and I have no doubt that this one will be just as amazing. Despite the uniqueness of each summer, throughout my years, my coaches have always motivated, guided, and been a friend to me. That is why I’m so excited to not only introduce new campers to this fantastic sport, but also to introduce them to our special little community. Cheers to some great sailing, Frances Chambers |
Cansail Coach: Alex Janson
Ahoy seafarers!
I’m Alex and I’m the coach of the CanSail program! I’ve sailed the waters of Sargent’s Bay for just about a decade now and it’s my first year coming back as a coach. I have very fond memories of endless summers spent between the Shack, the docks and the lake. Year after year, my coaches have transmitted their passion for sailing to me and pushed me to improve my abilities. They have always been extremely friendly and approachable, making everyone feel at home as soon as they set foot on the dock for the first time. My coaches fostered in me an attachment to the club that everyone in the SBYC community shares, and I’m excited to pass it on to the next generation of sailors. Here’s to a great summer! Alex |
